Towards the end of 2015, the ACT Legislative Assembly hosted the ACT’s event second event for the year, a session that explored the age old tension – particularly evident in the Westminster system – that sometimes arises between the prerogatives of executive government and the accountability and scrutiny functions of the legislature.
Vicki Dunne MLA, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, and Shane Rattenbury MLA, Minister for Territory and Municipal Services, kindly agreed to till this ground. Both events generated some really interesting discussions and it was great to see such enthusiastic participants.
As both members have been the presiding officer (Speaker) of the ACT Assembly, it was unsurprising that both expressed a number of similar points-of-view. Both members have also had experience in the Executive with Mr Rattenbury holding a number of ministerial portfolios in the 8th Assembly and Mrs Dunne having worked as the Chief of Staff for former Chief Minister Gary Humphries MLA.
